Robinson Park Public Open Space and Subdivision

Porter Consulting was lead engineer and responsible for the management of civil components includes liaison with the City’s project manager, landscape designer and electrical design sub-consultant for the power and communications services.

Brad Harris was the project coordinator and responsible for all aspects of the design and construction as well as Client liaison.  Glenn Hall was responsible for superintendence and site surveillance checks for the project.

This exciting redevelopment project of a tired, vacant open space now provides a great place for families and dog lovers.  It features a children’s playground with all ability equipment, barbecues, a basketball half-court, seating, lighting, public toilets, street parking, a dog exercise area and extensive landscaping.  While the COVID-19 pandemic meant the interruption of many services to keep the community safe, projects such as Robinson Park were able to continue, with civil works completed in August 2020.

Key Objectives

• Development of 42 lot residential subdivision including design, documentation and contract administration
• Improving safety to existing properties that had rear fencing onto a degraded park area.
• Community Park including playground, barbecues, basketball half court, seating, lighting, public toilet Street parking, dog exercise area, tree plantings and extensive landscaping.

Key Challenges/Management Strategies

• Residential interfaces with rear boundaries surrounding the site
• Historical land uses that required detailed investigation and construction consideration
• Integrated water sensitive design elements into surrounding parkland. Minimal drainage infrastructure installed.
• Retention of existing mature trees into the playground areas and bulk earthworks design.

The construction works value was approximately $4.7M and the project timeframe was 2014-2020.
