Artificial Hockey Turf

Aerial view of a Porter project, a hockey turf at Aquinas College

About the project:

Porter Consulting Engineers is the most experienced hockey field designer in Western Australia. Our staff have worked on 13 synthetic hockey field projects with 10 projects completed within the last 5 years which often include design of associated carpark facilities and servicing for the venues.

These projects represent state of the art facilities for our leading hockey clubs in the both regional and metropolitan Western Australia. We have also undertaken initial feasibility and provided supporting documentation for proposed artificial turfs in Como, Forrestfield and Wembley.

Project detail:

Our involvement commences with feasibility studies, the development of hockey pitch concept plans and the provision of indicative construction costs to support funding applications. Once funding has been secured, we provide a detailed design, tender review, construction supervision, contract administration and specialist technical advice.

The development of synthetic playing surfaces around the world is always changing and improving with the current surfaces being far more sustainable in terms of water use than previous generations of synthetics. We have an extremely good understanding of the Federation of International Hockey (FIH) Hockey Turf and Field Standards as well as existing relationships with Hockey WA and turf suppliers.

Our designs have incorporated many innovative ideas and solutions including below-ground irrigation cannons, lime stabilisation to reduce pitch settlement, LED lighting, water management, dugout location and a loose-laid turf fixing system. In particular, LED lighting designed for Guildford Grammar School was the first to be installed in Australia and provides a high level of lighting for Premier League and International play. The lighting was also used at the Sutherlands Park Hockey Turf and Lakelands Hockey Turf.

Recent designs completed include:

Lark Hill Hockey Turf, Port Kennedy – Porters were engaged by the City of Rockingham to prepare designs for the replacement of the turf at the Lark Hill Sporting Complex. Our scope also includes tender and construction administration of the civil works and pavement improvements on site. Construction works were undertaken at the completion of the 2021 season.

Lakelands Hockey Turf, South Lake – Porters were engaged by the City of Cockburn to provide the design of their new synthetic hockey field as part of the new sporting facility at South Lake. Our scope included design of the field as well as providing technical advice throughout construction including site visits and final inspection. Our team also provided design for the irrigation and lighting requirements and advice on earthwork requirements for the site and surrounding paths and drainage systems associated with the hockey field development. The development was completed in July 2019.

Sutherlands Park Hockey Turf, Huntingdale – Porters were engaged by the City of Gosnells to provide design development, a detailed design, tender review and construction supervision of a synthetic hockey pitch following the guidelines set down by both FIH and Hockey WA. The works also included the full site works, earthworks to the hockey field and surrounds as well as the design and approvals for a private sewer pump station to connect the existing clubhouse to the sewer system. The project was successfully completed from design commencement to the end of construction in 16 months and within the City’s allocated budget.
